Mothers Involved Stories

On September 6, 2021, my 16-year-old son Chavan Scruggs was killed near Figures Park, on Allison Street, in Mobile, Alabama. My world was suddenly turned upside down. I was at the lowest point I’ve ever been in my life. But I was determined to keep my son’s name alive. I began first by asking the Mobile City Council to rename the street where he was killed in his honor. In April 2022, that wish was granted. The street is now called Chavan J. Scruggs Way.

I decided that I wanted to do more as a bereaved mother and a concerned citizen. So, I began working on organizing Mothers Involved Against Gun Violence to help all mothers who have lost a child to gun violence. This group is open to anyone who is sympathetic to our cause.

On a Sunday morning, January 2, 2011, I had just returned from church. My son, Darrius Longmire, was at my mom’s house. He told her he was going down the street. He never returned. He was gunned down and murdered in broad daylight at a playground.

When I arrived, it was yellow tape everywhere. The police officer asked who I was. I replied that I was his mother. The female officer then said, “I’m so sorry.” My son was gone. I prayed every day. It took five years to get justice for Darrius. It was a cold case.

I’ve been active since losing my son, involved in many organizations for justice and prevention against gun violence. I also have my own organization called Worthy of Life. I stand against violence in our community. It is an honor to be a member of the Mothers Involved Against Gun Violence.

On Monday, June 26, 2017, my son, LaVaunghte Manassa, was gunned down and killed on Moffett Road/I-65. LaVaunghte had just turned 19 years old on May 16. My life took a turn for the worst, and I thought my life was over. My one and only son was no longer on this earth with me. I would only have photos of that infectious smile that’s stamped in my head. LaVaunghte was gone too soon at the hands of another young man committing yet another senseless crime in our city. The members of Mothers Involved Against Gun Violence ask for help from the entire community to put a stop to gun violence.
